Honoring the leaders and trailblazers in the fields of LGBT Health and Wellness, the Community Health Awards consistently draws hundreds of Callen-Lorde’s strongest friends and supporters. The evening includes a cocktail reception, banquet, awards presentation, entertainment, and inspirational speeches from community leaders.

Meet the 2016 honorees:
Robert Garofalo MD, MPH. – Division Head of Adolescent Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and a Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Dr. Garofalo is a clinical expert on LGBT Health as well as in the care of HIV+ adolescents. Dr. Garofalo is the founder of Fred Says, which makes grants in support of programs serving youth living with HIV. His advocacy work for transgender and gender non-conforming children and their families has changed the course of so many lives.
Dr. Garofalo will receive the 1st annual Dr. Merle C. Cunningham Memorial Community Health Award. Dr. Cunningham was a founder of Community Health Project, the precursor to Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, and a long-time member of our board of directors.
Chris Mosier – Athlete, coach, educator, and the founder of TransAthlete.com, Mosier became the first openly trans person to make the US National Team in 2015 and 2016. Mosier played a key role in helping to change the policies of the International Olympic Committee to allow the participation of transgender athletes.
Hon. Gustavo Rivera – Senator Rivera serves as the ranking member of the New York State Senate’s Health Committee where he focuses on addressing issues of health inequity, as well as promoting better nutritional and exercise habits through his initiative, Bronx CAN. The Senator’s support of Callen-Lorde Bronx demonstrates that together we can improve the lives of LGBTQ communities in the borough and across New York City.
Joy Tomchin – A nationally recognized activist in the LGBTQ, women’s and children’s rights movements, Tomchin’s longtime commitment and leadership on LGBTQ causes has helped raise awareness and shape public perception around issues impacting our communities. From her leadership at GMHC and the Lesbian AIDS Project to her service at the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and most recently, her invaluable partnership in bringing How to Survive a Plague to life, Tomchin has helped to advance our communities fight for justice and equality.
