HIV/AIDS Services

Callen-Lorde provides comprehensive and state-of-the-art HIV/AIDS care and support in an integrated model of care. Patients have a choice of providers and a range of services that are available under one roof. Callen-Lorde follows all New York State Department of Health (DOH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines regarding HIV/AIDS care and treatment. Callen-Lorde’s HIV/AIDS Treatment Services includes:

    • HIV Documentation: To experience a smooth first visit, you must bring one of the following types of documentation with you:
      • HIV diagnosis letter, on letterhead, from another HIV testing site that must include your name and HIV diagnosis (this cannot come from an anonymous testing site)
      • Documentation of ADAP coverage that must include your name
      • A copy of the most recent HIV lab results from abother medical facility which includes, your name and have a detectable viral load; if you have an undectectable viral load, this is not an appropriate form of documentation
      • Full medical record from another medical office/facility that must include your name and diagnosis
      • Documentation of a reactive OraQuick® test (preliminary positive) with your name on it that will require a confirmatory blood draw once you are here at Callen-Lorde.

        ** An M11Q form is not an acceptable form of documentation

      If you forget or do not have one of these documents, you will be required to have a rapid HIV test at Callen-Lorde to establish your HIV diagnosis officially.
    • HIV Orientation: For people new diagnosed with HIV or who are transferring care t Callen-Lorde, we provide a one on one meeting with a counselor to answer your questions about HIV, laboratory testing, medications and treatments. The counselor will also discuss how to access services at Callen-Lorde and our affiliated partners. The orientation also give persons general information about medication and financial assistance programs, confidentiality protections and general support referrals.
    • Primary medical care: Comprehensive, quality medical care with experienced HIV specialist providers that includes: immune system monitoring, antiretroviral therapies, treatment adherence education, prophylactic treatments, nutritional counseling, and referrals to other Callen-Lorde services.
    • Support groups
    • Mental Health: Individual counseling and psychotherapy and annual psychosocial assessments.
    • Medication adherence support and education: Individual counseling with a highly experienced nurse to provide you with education and support about HIV infection, medications and support for helping you take the medications appropriately. These nurses also help to immediately address any side effects from medications and assist in having medications refilled if needed.
    • Case Management: Our Case Manager offers information, assistance and referrals regarding benefits and entitlements for those living with HIV, including insurance, housing, and referrals to other supportive services.
    • Sexual Health Counseling: These counseling services are for HIV-positive and HIV-negative clients. Meet with an HIV counselor or social worker for up to 12 sessions to help identify risks for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and create an individualized risk reduction plan both to promote your health and minimize possible harm.
    • Nutritional Counseling: Appointments available with Callen-Lorde’s nutritionist.
    • Referrals to Clinical Trials
