Primary Care
The Callen-Lorde Community Health Center is New York City's only medical center dedicated to meeting the health care needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and people living with HIV/AIDS regardless of ability to pay. Although we target these communities Callen-Lorde is welcoming to all.
Callen-Lorde offers a comprehensive, integrated program of quality medical and mental health services under a primary care model, which emphasizes preventive health and wellness. We seek to engage our patients in an ongoing treatment relationship that focuses on prevention and early intervention in order to assure optimal health and wellbeing. This bio-psychosocial approach means, for example, that our providers talk to patients about all aspects of their life.
Callen-Lorde's services include:
- General medicine
- Comprehensive primary care by providers with extensive expertise in LGBT health concerns, including common episodic medical problems, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cardiac risk assessment, chronic disease management (asthma, diabetes, hypertension, etc.), addiction screening, stress and depression, and HIV prevention.
- Lesbian Health Services
- Comprehensive primary health care focused on women's wellness, gynecological care, breast health (including mammography referrals), as well as targeted health education and counseling for women who partner with women.
- HIV/AIDS Services
- Comprehensive HIV-specialized primary care services with experienced providers that meet New York State Department of Health standards for HIV specialists. Services include immune system monitoring, antiretroviral therapies, treatment adherence education, prophylactic treatments, nutritional counseling, mental health care, substance use assessment, access to clinical trials, and case management services. In addition, HIV prevention services are provided, including HIV counseling and testing, risk reduction counseling, and support groups.
- Health Outreach to Teens (HOTT)
- Low- and/or no-cost medical and mental health services for LGBT and street youth, including comprehensive primary care, counseling, social services, HIV/STI prevention services and health education. Services are delivered both on-site at Callen-Lorde and on a fully-equipped medical van.
- Senior Health Services
- Primary care specifically tailored to meet the health care needs of older adults.
- Transgender Services
- Comprehensive primary care, including hormone therapy, counseling and education, and referrals to support services.
