Mental Health/Social Services
In close collaboration with medical providers, Callen-Lorde's Mental Health and Social Services Department offers a comprehensive range of services to support your emotional and physical well-being. Callen-Lorde is committed to providing services that are affirmative, sex-positive, culturally sensitive, consistent with risk reduction principles, and that promote patient self-determination.
Mental Health and Social Services offered include:
-
- Mental Health Consultation/Individual Counseling
- Patients engaged in medical care at Callen-Lorde who have Medicaid, Medicare, Healthfirst, or ADAP insurance can
receive short-term individualized counseling. A Callen-Lorde
Clinical Social Worker will meet with you to assess your
psychotherapy and counseling needs, and then will make
a recommendation for further treatment at either Callen-Lorde
or an outside agency that might better meet your requirements.
-
-
- Transgender Counseling and Education
- Gender-different people have historically met with widespread
discrimination and misunderstanding, resulting in many
transgender-identified persons facing barriers to adequate
and timely health care and social services. The Transgender
Counseling and Education session aims to offer specialized
information and support to Callen-Lorde patients of transgender
experience, including information and support on Cross-Gender
Hormone Therapy.
- Substance Use Assessment and Referral
- If you are concerned about your drug or alcohol use
and the effect it may be having on your health and quality
of life, you may receive an assessment. This assessment,
which may include one or more sessions, will determine
if you could benefit from any of the following referrals:
12-step fellowship (such as AA, NA, CA), a detox/rehab/outpatient
treatment program, a psychiatric evaluation for a differential
diagnosis of mood and/or psychotic disorders, and/or a
harm reduction program.

- Psychiatric Services
- Our staff psychiatrists are primarily available for
an initial evaluation visit and a follow-up visit. You
can be referred for ongoing services with a psychiatrist
by a Primary Care Provider or a Clinical Social Worker.
You will receive a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation,
including a psychiatric and medical history, a mental
status exam, an assessment and a treatment plan. A psychiatric
consultation may include a diagnostic work-up (blood work
and other laboratory tests), prescriptions for psychotropic
medications, and referrals for other services.
